Danny's brother Rick Elfman (filmmaker, ie, "Forbidden Zone")
Rick's (French) wife Marie
Billy Superball (aka William Falwell)
Jan the swordswallower
A couple of more I can't recall right now.
I knew all of them personally when we all lived in Venice in the 70's (the MK days). In fact, I did sound for them at their ongoing gig at the Daisy Club in Beverly Hills. Good times.
Just thought you might like to round out the cast.

Subject: A Few Oingo Boingo Notations.....
Mystic Knights story: The MKof the OB performed at a Science Fiction convention in LA in the late 70's, with a prop dragon. This giant prop dragon had a fire extinguisher for a penis, which eventually sprayed the audience!! (Suffice to say, they were not invited back!)
RUMOURED ALBUM: I saw it advertised in a used record
shop flyer, but arrived too late to snag it, but apparently, PENTHOUSE RECORDS
(owned by the magazine), released an Oingo Boingo Live Disc(s)(Supposedly 2
discs), around the "Mystic Knights/Oingo Boingo EP" conversion period.

Subject: New Boingo info?
Hi, I was just looking at your OIngo Boingo site and thought it was very good. I had a tidbit of info regarding the Mystic Knights incarnation of the band that I think is inetersting to note. There appears to be a direct Oingo Boingo / Mr. Bungle connection. I heard from several sources that Theobold Brooks-Lengyel, an integral member of Mr. Bungle until about 3 years ago when he left the band, played in the Mystic Knights for a while before they turned into Oingo Boingo. Have you heard this? Fans may find this interesting since both bands have many similar traits.
Hiya! I can add some information to your Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo list. I was a member of the band between '73 and late '75 -- I played trumpet, tuba, guitar, and whatever else they threw in my face. Here's some names to add:
Me (Josh Gordon). (I went to school with Steve Bartek, and he was buddies with my big brother Peter; Steve played with me at my very first professional theater gig, "Threepenny Opera" at the Odyssey Theatre, directed by Ron Sossi; Steve, Peter, and I were in the band.)
All of Foster Brashear's stuff is correct.
William Winant played with the band in that period (great percussionist.)
The sword swallower is Jan Munro. He was also a good slack-rope walker and
fire-breather. In fact, I think he may have mostly been a fire breather. Billy
Superball we called the World's Worst Escape Artist.
I sure wish I remembered the accordionist's name! Both she and her brother
were quite good accordionists.
Some other places we played: besides the Daisy in Beverly Hills, we had an ongoing gig at the Century City Playhouse (a couple blocks away, the Kentucky Fried Theater was in full swing.) We played at a great big house, formerly a speakeasy, in Topanga Canyon; I don't remember the name of the place, but it was owned by the orchestra bassist Mickey Nadel. We also played a lot on the streets of Westwood to promote our shows. We did a lot of private parties, too; my last gig with them was a New Years Eve party in 1975-1976. We played several times at the Great American Food & Beverage Companies; we also performed at Filmex for the premier of "Flesh for Frankenstein". And we played bit parts in the truly abominable film "Mr Sycamore."
We also did some recording at a college TV station, or maybe it was a small public TV station -- I think it might have been Santa Monica City College or something like that. I'd love to know if those tapes still exist!
Long ago and far away...
The song "Hipsters on Parade" was written by one of the original Mystic Knights
of the Oingo Boingo members who had left before I joined the grooup: Ernie
Fosselius, who went on to do the lovely parody films "Hardware Wars" and "Porklips
Now".
Pelican Records was founded by my uncle (John Kniest) in the early 70's. It was back then when he gave me a demo copy of a novelty song titled "You've Got Your Baby Back" (dedicated to William Randolph Hearst) by a band called The Mystic Knights of The Oingo Boingo.
However, after 25 years there is no way I can even remember what ever happened to that 45. And since John has since passed away there is virtually no way of getting another copy.
Sincerely,
Bill Keys
Hi Matt, I saw a post on your site about Theobold Brooks-Lengyel possibly being a memer of the MKOTOB. I believe there is a bit of confusion on this. He would have been way too young to be in the band in the 70s according to what I've found. William Winant, on the other hand, does have an affiliation with both bands and might what spawned all this. I hope this helps. -Scott
Dude: I played with Boingo off and on from 1972-1975, then again in '92 or '91 on the "Insanity" tour. I also played percussion for Danny on the "Batman Returns" soundtrack. I've been playing with Mr. Bungle since 1995, this includes 2 records "Disco Volante" and "California" on warner bros. records, numerous tours throughout the world,as well as numerous side projects with various band members. Keep the the faith..peace..william winant
Hi:
Just wanted to add an anecdotal detail regarding this single.
You mention the shops around Berkeley sold them. That's correct. Around 1981 or 1982, Leopold's (RIP) gave me a few thousand 45s that were left over from a promotion. Mostly just remainder stuff that, after weeding out the goodies, I passed on to Goodwill.
Anyway, as I was dragging the 45s to my car, I noticed a stack of 45s still sitting on the shelf in the used section of the downstairs. I asked if they were getting rid of those, too.
The guy looked at them and said "yeah, take them, they're just gathering dust."
That's how I got my small stack of unplayed Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo "You Got Your Baby Back" singles. I have some of them still (somewhere...) I gave away 2 or three a year or two later to Moby Disc (used record store chain in So-Cal). I went in selling a bunch of vinyl albums, plus the 45s. The guy behind the counter bought the albums, but told me they didn't buy 45s. Stupidly, I just told him to keep them (and decided they must not be worth much...grrr...)

Stumbled across your website.........my one enduring memory is from a show in the Fall of 1980 at Madame Wongs West.......an aptly titled venue because whenever I see one of those barroom brawl scenes in a Western, I think of that show. Not the usual mosh pit stuff, but roundhouse punching, chair throwing, alcohol flying...............and the amazing thing was the band did not stop for any of it! In fact, they played an amazing set, the full band including horn section on that tiny stage in that tiny room! What a night! Had to go to work the next morning.........still marveling at that show 20+ years down the road....................... Mark
