I've heard it originally performed as a 3-minute song. I presume it was written for this length (not 20 minutes) then later expanded, just for the hell of it. Perhaps the 20 minute arrangement was an earlier experiment.

(This) was a 3min track to begin with that was later expanded out in what Danny described in an interview of the time as "an experiment in musical elasticity". It was expanded up to over 20mins before getting cut back down to the length it is on "Boingo".

Was an old song (Mystic Knights era?) the band dropped thinking it was too silly.

"actually an old song we worked up with acoustic instruments" - D. Elfman. (from a KROQ interview around 1990, I think). He also CLEARLY pronounced the quote bit to be "they're screwing in the fields" rather than the somewhat tamer "Shooting".

"My earliest hearing of 'Helpless' was in 1993 when the full band played their 1st Las Vegas show for a radio station called The Edge. Elfman prefaced it by saying it was an autobiographical tune of how his life became a living hell. It was not featured at the 1990 shows so my guess is it came from the months afterwards as it never showed up on tapes of the earlier gigs.
