Originally from Fayetteville, Arkansas, Julia headed west after a life-changing near-death experience in her home state. She realized her calling while hiking around the awe-inspiring old growth forests of Northern California. From Dec 10th 1997 to Dec 15 1999, in an effort to discourage approaching timber companies, Julia lived in the treetop of a Stafford Giant Redwood she nicknamed "Luna". Julia put up with timber-company sponsored harassment including attempts to starve her, "buzz" her (helicopter hovering in place just above her tree), and snap the ropes that support her walkways and supplies. Media Barrier: People from all walks of life are becoming aware of Julia's action. Recently, Julia's story was featured in a Rolling Stone magazine article (No. 816/817; July 8-22). UPDATE: Luna - The Stafford Giant is Permanently Protected and Julia Butterfly Hill is safely on the ground! Julia has written a book about her experience and is frequently member of the Spitfire lecture tour. ANOTHER UPDATE: Luna was destoyed by some low-life vandals.
