Shortly after American warplanes began carpet-bombing the nation of Iraq in January of 1991, then-President Bush took a vacation in Kennebunkport. His approval ratings were steadily rising, but one person did not approve of the President's decisions. During a service at First Congregational Church of Kennebunkport (with President Bush in attendance), John Schuchardt, a life-long opposer of war, stood up in his pew and yelled repeatedly "God abhors this bloodshed!" The worshippers attempted to drown Schuchardt out by singing God Bless America, but he persisted in his protest and was eventually led away and arrested by secret servicemen. Media Barrier: Brief mentions of this event were made on national news. TV footage/photos were limited mainly to images of the arrest with Schuchardt being escorted into a police vehicle. No discussions of bringing the troops home or halting the bloodshed were found on any of the corporate media outlets. George Bush's presidential approval ratings, allegedly, soared to over 80%.
