Culture Jamming is Sociology
Can you imagine seeing this sign on buses,
buildings, streetpoles and other public utilities?S'pose people made stickers and fliers of this image and stuck them up all over town... What would happen? Y'know, come to think of it, I bet this page could print out rather nicely on a laser printer. Heck, it might even look good printed out by a crappy old dot-matrix printer (but you really should upgrade). Which neighborhood copy stores would refuse to print them, I wonder...? Would somebody actually put a sticker like this where numerous everyday 9-5ers would see it, or would kids simply stick it on their skateboards next to their anarchy sticker? Would John Carlson, or some other conservative of the week, use it as an excuse to propose a "three strikes your out" policy that includes culture jamming? or that the death penalty be lowered to 14? What would a police officer do if he/she found a sticker like this on his/her vehicle? Would they show it on Cops if it happened during a taping? Or would they censor it with one of those face-blurring blots? If the stickering and postering of this message (or one similar to it) were to reach epidemic proportions... would KOMO call an emergency Town Meeting episode to deal with the "problem"? Would KOMO then sell the story to CNN and profit from it? Aren't "culture jamming" efforts negated somehow when local media millionaires can turn a valuable de-programming mechanism and turn it into an electronic marketing commodity?
