"The two greatest obstacles to democracy in the United States are, first, the widespread delusion among the poor that we have a democracy, and second, the chronic terror among the rich, lest we get it."

–Edward Dowling, 1941

A Vote For Nader is a Vote for Nader

Why vote for Nader? Reason I – A vote for Nader builds upon the ongoing struggle against corporate globalization

The Democratic Party has become a corporate pawn and now those who refer to themselves as "Democrats" find themselves in a quandry: Do I vote my alleged liberal/progressive politics? or do I support the party I'm aligned with?

On our "Ship of State," the notion of American democracy has become a myth barely visible in the rearview mirror as our economic cruise propels us ever faster into waters not navigated since medeival feudalism. The new kings are the billionaires who want to be trillionaires... present day lords and vassals are the politicians, their lawyers, managers and trustees. And, as the serfs of medeival times toiled on behalf of their kings and lords, we consumers (mistakenly referring to ourselves as "citizens") toil and sweat for the corporations that currently dominate life on our little lonely planet.

There is only one candidate who is willing to fight this corporate feudalism, much less admit it is taking place at all. You guessed it... Ralph Nader.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans have spent much of the last year organizing and protesting against global corporatization. In November 1999, we witnessed an estimated 60,000 people (likely far more than this) gather in Seattle to shut down a major meeting of the World Trade Organization (aka WTO an international institution which wants to be the Supreme Court of global trade). Since that time protestors have been present at international meetings across the United States and abroad: Early in the year in Switzerland as WTO-types attempted to regroup after Seattle; In April at the IMF/World Bank meetings in Washington, DC; Over the summer at the Republicratic conventions in Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Most recently the protestors' focus turned to Prague where more high-level bla bla bla will be taking place.

By voluntarily handing over certain powers to an organization such as the WTO, governments are allowing pro-globalization forces to officially place markets and capital ahead of human lives and human needs. Citizens across the world are now diligently protesting the globalization process at every available opportunity insisting on "Fair Trade, Not Free Trade". Unfortunately, the WTO in its current form is widely supported by American politicians on "both" sides of our political spectrum. If you think Vice President Gore is the man to upset this multi-trillion dollar apple cart you are delusional. For Gore to suggest the US leave the WTO in favor of a more fair-minded world trade body–or even suggest reforming the WTO–would require him to take what he perceives to be an "unpopular" stand on the issue. Unpopular to whom? Gore is ignoring the very people he expects will vote for him in November. Gore confuses jeopardizing his corporate funding sources with unpopularity.

It's time for us to stop giving political power to confused candidates.
