Sky Cries Mary
"Breathing is the way I pray / Dreaming is the way I pray," goes the chorus of 'Breath In', the opening track of Sky Cries Mary's sixth release. It sets the stage for a wonderfully trippy experience that takes the listener all over the emotional spectrum. SCM tunes have a unique spacey quality to them. Complimenting this are band founder Roderick Romero's wonderfully poetic lyrics that can't decide which side of the physical/spiritual border they're from or heading toward. It's difficult not to use purely organic terms when describing the pace of this music: The mellow tunes ebb and flow like the tides, some of them eventually building up to a crash of wave against rock. The harder songs swirl around your noggin' like a whirlwind or a mushroom trip. Anisa Romero's voice is absolutely beautiful. Try listening to the song 'Moonbathing' without becoming completely hypnotized, nay aroused, by her multi-layered vocals... (hint: you can't). This music exists in its own time. 'Sister,' to me a song about the death (or losing) of a close friend, suggests that parting is sad, but does not need to be frightening. Krist Novoselic is the guest bassist on 'Gliding', a northern-euro folksy number with an accordian and a hint of melancholy. 'Grey Eyes' is a fast-paced, rhythmic number about (I'm guessing) a free-spirited house cat. In a nutshell: SCM has created yet another album of music that inspires the soul, with lyrics that kick start the imagination.
